- Earlier, I spoke of how having no constraints can lead to thinking that lacks imagination, the path of least resistance. In the world of improv, this is often referred to as the first thought. Improvisors are known to be wildly creative and inventive. While some of this creative output can be attributed to talent, most of it is due to training and skill. One of the main tenants of improvisation and arguably one of the primary contributors to creative thinking is thinking to the third thought. What does that even mean? Here's the deal. Often the first solutions we come up with when faced with a problem are obvious ones, coming from a non-thinking reaction. The next set is more interesting, typically better crafted, but still maybe unoriginal.
