- Here's the deal. We can all think that we're awesome at empathy, sensitivity, inclusion, and more, and maybe you are, but I'd be willing to bet my life on the fact that at some point you will cross the line and say something that could hurt another person. I know I have. All I can do is give you some reminders for being self-aware and being aware of other's reactions. First, be mindful of space. If hugging, for example, is accepted in your company culture, you still have to be aware and mindful of those who may not want to be hugged. People will give you nonverbal cues, such as turning their body away from you or not putting their arm around you, so look for these types of behaviors and you'll know who to hug and who not to. Second, be mindful of speech. Take humor and sarcasm for example. If you're just a nickname kind of person or like to be sarcastic, it might be good to ask permission first, or once it slips…
