- When it comes to our focus, we all have good days and bad days. Some days the time flies and we get loads done and we feel really pleased with what we've achieved. Other days, it's a struggle to stay on task for more than five minutes. The temptation of browsing the internet seems too great to resist. You end the day feeling like you spent a lot of time working but with not much to show for it. The number one nemesis to immersive work is interruptions. This is because when you're interrupted in the middle of a task, it fragments your attention, so instead of achieving this continuous block of focus, it's fragmented by all the interruptions, harming your ability to stay focused and go deep. Gloria Mark, a professor of informatics at the University of California Irvine, is an expert on the science of attention fragmentation, and she's found that an interruption, even if it's only a short delay, increases the total time required to complete the task by a significant fraction.
