- Because productive leadership means developing other leaders, you're going to spend a healthy amount of time in training. However, many leaders are uncertain about how to spend this time. Begin by defining your objective. What are you trying to accomplish? In general, you want to train someone to the point where they know the process well enough to teach it to someone else. So as you're training, encourage the person to think of how they would need to explain or teach this concept. Then at the end of the training process, encourage them to share one thing they learned with someone else. When people approach training with the mindset of having to teach another person, their retention improves. Now, how do we go about this training? I like this acronym, DPO.
