- If I were to ask you what are the three leading causes of death in the United States of America, what would you think they would be? I'll give you the first two. Number one is heart disease, number two is cancer. What's number three? Would you believe, if it was a disease, the third leading cause of death in the United States is prescription mistakes. Doctors and nurses giving people the wrong medication or the wrong dosage of medication harms 200,000 Americans every year. Now for decades, hospitals have just thought this is the cost of doing business. There's nothing they can do about this problem, until a brave group of nurses tried to get to the bottom of why so many people are harmed by this perfectly preventable problem. Turns out what these nurses found was that when nurses are dispensing medication, they're interrupted, on average, 10 times during every dosing session, leading them to lose their concentration and give people the wrong medication.
