- There are two competing theories about the media. The first is that your name should only appear in the press three times, when you're born, when you married and when you die. But there's a more modern theory, which is that no press is bad press, because the more visibility you have, the better it is for you. So as we think about building leadership visibility, what's actually the right approach here. As with everything else, being quoted by traditional media should be about the value it can create, balanced against the costs. The value of appearing in traditional media appears to be high. After all, if you're quoted in the paper, people will see it, and that could have a positive impact on various relationships you have. I remember the first time my father read a quote of mine in The Wall Street Journal. And I remember it because he called me. He told me how proud he was of me.
