Using technology to facilitate global communication
- In global teams we rarely have the opportunity to get face-to-face. So most communication happens through technology. Different technologies are good and bad for different team tasks. So choosing the right technology for the right task is a critical skill for global leaders. A useful technique for thinking about this is to create a scale depending on how much context the different technologies can communicate. A high-context technology enables us to see people face-to-face, to read expressions and body language, and to pick up subtle nuances in behavior. Face-to-face communication is the highest context, followed by video. Some recent research has shown that video is almost as good as face-to-face for things like building trust. Lower-context technologies only enable us to communicate with words. Text messages or emails would be at the low context end of the scale. You can then locate the other technologies that…
