Utilizing authors, bloggers, and industry experts

- Regardless of schedule or location influencers around the world can be reached from the comfort of your own home. It takes some know-how and finesse but it's more doable than you may think. And it can launch your career forward in one powerful step. Just think, every time you pick up your phone or open your laptop, you're surrounded by digital influencers. From authors to bloggers to YouTube content creators and more, these people are industry and subject matter experts with massive personal networks. And best of all they've shown that they have a passion for sharing their knowledge and insight with others. Coming across a digital influencer is kind of like listening to a guest speaker or attending a panel but with the added perk of the comfort of your couch. And while YouTube may not be face-to-face you're still able to make contact. Let's start by considering what influencers are looking for from you. After all the first step in any networking relationship is demonstrating that the connection can serve both of you. When it comes to influencers, they're looking for attention from an audience. So if you're viewing their content on a site that allows you to hit the like button, bookmark or share their content, or even make a comment, go for it. If you have the opportunity to increase the scope of the influencers audience, that's even better. Repost their content on Twitter, LinkedIn, or other platforms to give them more visibility with your own network. Now that you've done your part to give them a hand you want to call their attention to you. Depending on how much engagement that influencers content receives you may or may not be able to get their attention with a like. A comment is more noticeable. Even better when you repost or share their content with your own network, tag the influencer with a kind note. So for instance you could post check out this fantastic take from, remember to tag them at the influencer, and include a link to their content. The influencer will be more likely to notice you and they'll see that you're helping to expand their followers. Do this for a few weeks and do it for many of their posts so that your name becomes a familiar sight with the influencer. At this point you have some name recognition with them so it's time to reach out directly. Linked in is a great way to reach out because it sets a professional tone. Of course you can reach out to the influencer on other social networks instead if they aren't very active on LinkedIn. In your message subtly call attention to the way you've been helping the influencer expand their network. Let them know that you've been sharing their content with your followers. If there is anyone specific in your network that would be a helpful person for the influencer to know you can even offer an introduction. Finally, get to the call to action in your message. Depending on whether the influencer is based in your area ask them for a 10 minute meeting, video chat session, or phone call. Tell them that you love to find out more about their work and discuss how you two can help each other expand your professional networks. Throughout the process make sure you keep your expectations in check. Influencers are busy people and not all of them will respond to you right away. If your message goes unanswered don't get discouraged. Continue to interact with the influencers content and follow-up about your message after a few days or a week. When you're trying to build relationships with influencers not all of them will turn into career boosting connections. You never know who will be the best assets for your network so keep trying one thought leader after another. Persistence pays off in the networking game. And hey I get it, reaching out to an influencer can be intimidating. I've felt that stress myself. But it's a skill you can hone over time. And using these steps can make the process easier and more successful. No matter what your industry or career goals may be.
