Welcome hires with curiosity, coaching, and encouragement

- How did you feel showing up to work on the first day of your current job? How did your manager at that time help make it a smooth transition? Maybe you wish they had done things a little differently, perhaps providing a bit more coaching and support. Onboarding new hires isn't as simple as handing somebody a company handbook and expecting them to hit the ground running. As your new team member's first official impression of your organization, onboarding provides an opportunity to set the tone for their entire experience. I've been running my own consulting practice in New York City since 2011 after working at Google for five and a half years in coaching, training, and career development. Glassdoor says strong employee onboarding can increase retention by up to 82%, but according to Gallup, only 12% of employees feel their companies are adept at onboarding new hires. With a coaching approach, you can help new hires craft a vision for success in their role and in the organization, moving beyond paperwork and processes to emphasize curiosity and deep listening instead.
