What is the curiosity mindset?
- When I was six years old my parents sent me off to work with my dad at what was to be the first of hundreds of auctions. Like my grandfather before him my dad was an auctioneer and auctions were like cabinets of curiosities. My playgrounds were old industrial sawmills, bankrupt retail stores, ghost town office buildings and big machine shops. During and after the auctions my parents pelted me with questions. Why did that man keep wagging his cigar between his teeth? How can you decide at what price to start the bidding? What does that machine do? Why does every auction start with a wrench? Questions were meant to bust assumptions, to get me to pay more attention or to generate insights or deeper thinking. What I learned about curiosity in those greasy warehouses as a kid I later validated in the dusty halls of academia and expanded on with my company Applied Curiosity Lab.
