What to expect: Process and people

- Welcome to this course on influencing and persuading. And this is an important subject because influencing and persuading are happening all the time, in every interaction that you have with anyone really. So if you're buying something or if you're selling something then there's a lot of influencing going on. But also when you're dealing with your boss or if you're dealing with people who work for you. If you're dealing with colleagues who you don't have power over, then influencing and persuading become really important. So when you're dealing with people in your team or in other departments of work, it's important. It's also important in your social life. Because quite often, you're trying to influence friends. You might want to persuade them to go to the restaurant that you like. Or to even go on a holiday with you. And it might be the holiday that you want to go on rather than the one that they want to go on. And of course, in your personal life at home, in your marriage with your partner, with your children, influencing and persuading are happening all the time. So every situation you might have, whether it's a job interview, whether it's an argument you're having with somebody, every time you want to persuade anybody to do anything, these techniques will come into play. Now there's been a lot written about influencing and there's been a lot of research and it's an interesting subject because it's really a collection, of lots and lots of techniques. And the problem is how to structure it. How to know which technique to use when. So what I've done in this course, is I divided it into two main sections. We're going to look at the influencing process. Because there's a process you can follow that gets you from starting with your objectives to ending with getting agreement with the other person, that they're going to do what you want. So we will look at that whole process and which techniques to use at which stage. But we're also going to look at different types of people, because different techniques work better on different people. So once you know, what type of person you're dealing with, you can pull out the right technique for them. So we've got a whole load of fascinating stuff to get into, let's dive in and get started.
