From the course: When Negotiation's about More than Money: How to Negotiate (Almost) Anything

What to expect

- Welcome to this applied negotiating course. My name is Chris Croft. I've been teaching negotiating for years and also observing myself sometimes doing it well, sometimes not so well, and observing other people when they negotiate with me. I think it's a fascinating subject and it's really important because negotiations happen all the time, not just when you're buying and selling, but whenever you meet with anybody, and they want something and you want something and you have to work out a way forward. So what I've done with this course is I've started by summarizing the process and it is a generic process you can use in every situation. But then I've looked at how you would apply it to some specific situations that we all encounter, buying, selling, job interviews, difficult colleagues, everything. And my thinking on this is that if I show you real situations, it'll make it much easier for you to apply it in those situations. In fact, you can jump straight to that section if you have that particular type of negotiation coming up. But also there are subtleties that are different in each situation. For example, there's a tactical device which buyers use where they say, "Oh, you'll have to do better than that," and that's a great one to use when you're buying, but you probably wouldn't use that on your boss. So let's dive in, have a quick look at the process, and then we'll look at how we apply it to a whole lot of different situations.
