What is high-stakes communication?
- You know the feeling when you feel comfortable in one setting, and then, suddenly things change? The setting changes, and you freak out, because the content, the people, the timing, and even your internal dialog all shift. If so, that comfortable moment just became high-stakes. High-stakes moments are situations that you find yourself in where there's a lot of pressure on you to perform. Now you might be asking, "Do I have these moments?" Well, let's see. The first thing that sets high-stakes moments apart is the pressure of time. When we have time to explain our ideas and build a relationship, it's easy, but when someone gives us two minutes to get to our point and to tell them who we are, it's a lot harder. And that's when you need to ask yourself, "Is it possible that the time that I have been given "will be less than I think? "Is it possible that I won't get a chance "to get in front of this person "or these people again for awhile?" And if the answer is yes to either of those…
