What leaders must know about the nature of leading change
- A top executive at Facebook once told me to lead change is to understand the nature of leading change. She meant that before engaging in leading change, it helps to know a set of fundamental truths you'll experience as you navigate it. Here are those truths. First, successful change is a path, not a process. It's a path to a better way forward, not just a process to endure. As a leader of change, you must paint a clear, simple vision of a desired future state that the change brings about. For example, I know of a regional bookstore chain that had to change or risk going out of business due to the amount of sales that it was losing to competing online book retailers. Company leaders made that reality very clear to employees, while also painting a clear, simple vision. They wanted to become a center for the community, a gathering place and an experience where you could browse books, hold events, have lunch, enjoy music…
