From the course: Professional Networking for Career Starters

What is a professional network?

- If you were to talk to me about having a network years ago, I would have asked you what is a network? Because now transitioning from having a network and going through the process of networking, it's simply engaging in your personal network, connecting with people, following up, keeping up on your other lasting relationships. And for myself, after learning what networking was, I went through the process of Youth of the Year, which is a process that takes young adults through learning how to be professional, and also how to network. And I was able to meet many professionals who held many different backgrounds. And specifically, I was able to meet the CEO of a tech company. And after meeting him and chatting a bunch in person, we were able to get each other's contact information and we were able to email back and forth and have a few sit-down meetings. I was nervous to start that journey. I was nervous to take that first step. But I also knew that in order to make those connections, I had to be brave. And I had to go out and take that first call of action, which is connecting with people. So get out there and start to engage with your personal network. You may find that the people within your network are connected with people beyond and within their personal network. And also start to connect with those people. You may find that you are on your path to your new career or your new interest or goal.
