What's wrong with the old way of networking?

- Let me start with a warning, the notion that networking has forever changed might offend some of you, especially if you've mastered the old school networking style. But the reality is that the old way is going away, if it's not gone already and for good reason. I don't have to tell you that the world has changed, this of course includes the business world where no one has 30 year careers in the same organization any longer. And we're moving up often means moving over and up or even striking out on your own. I want to detail three of these changes so that you can recognize networking's renewed and emerging importance. First realize that you are not guaranteed to be in the same job for decades. In fact, most upward movements today come from lateral moves not within the same company. That means relationships are more crucial than ever, they need to be developed and curated with people across your industry not just in your company. Second, beyond upward mobility, there's also the issue of knowledge. Because of technology, today's knowledge spreads like pollinating bees moving from flower to flower. You need to know people outside of your bubble in order to be exposed to the knowledge you don't have, as well as things you didn't even know you didn't know, that will give you an edge over those who prefer to stay in the bubble. Finally, the era of self-employment is upon us in ways that didn't exist for my father or his father. Many people who gain a skill at their job can eventually take that skill and become independent consultants. This enables them to make more money on their own and control their time by contracting their services to companies like yours. Again, that means your network is more important than ever. Perhaps the old way of networking was fine for different era, but things change quickly in today's business world which means you should embrace the new and effective ways to connect with others for lasting results. Welcome these changes and be prepared to experience the lasting benefits.
