Why a raise is worth more than you think
- But is it worth asking for a pay rise? We're only going to get maybe a couple of percent and we might upset our boss, you know. So is it worth the hassle? And I would say absolutely, yes. Two reasons why it's worth doing. First of all there's the concept of disposable income. So let's suppose that you get paid 25,000 and let's suppose that your living costs are 24,000. You've really only got 1000 pounds or dollars to spend on the things that you want to spend. Now I'm just simplifying the numbers but the concept is true, isn't it? That you've got a certain amount of money you have to spend on your mortgage, food, petrol, et cetera. So imagine if you were being paid 25 you have to spend 24 on living, you've only got one. If you could get a pay rise from 25 to 26 you would double the amount of disposable money you've got. You've now got 2000 to spend on the fun things in life in a way you've doubled your pay.
