Work with difficult people
- One of the most important skills today for achieving career goals is collaborating with and influencing others. Whether you're working on a team or need to influence others over whom you have no authority being able to connect with people is essential. As human beings, we're more open to collaborating and being influenced by those we trust. Here's the challenge. Making a trusted connection with others can be hard when we see ourselves as very different from them. For example, we may think, oh John is so hard to work with because he's lazy or any other quality we don't like about John. That's okay. The first step is to be aware of, accept and take ownership of the thoughts we have about John. When our thoughts are full of what's wrong with John, it's pretty hard to establish a trusting relationship with him. The bad news is we have very little control over John. The good news is that we can use mindfulness to get curious…
