- And so now that we have a better understanding of face, it helps us to understand why threats can be so damaging. Can you give us a little bit of an analysis of threats analyzed with the concept of face? - Yes, those threats could be, they could be very damaging because of two reasons, one, because of the way they're made and two, because a threat by its very essence now is harming our sense of a negative face. So in terms of how the threat is made, politeness theory breaks down all messaging into two types of messaging. There's one called on-record messaging, which is like a very direct, abrasive way to do something. So if I wanted you to do something and I literally say to you, "Go do this now," that would be on-record. Off-record is a little bit different, and that is more implied, that is softer, it's a little bit of, you know, it's kind of shaded where we're not directly asking or telling something to do something,…
