The future of leadership and the future of work

- The future is going to be different than the present. And one of the most important things that's going to change is how people work. The terms for this continued and potentially accelerating set of changes is called the future of work. As a leader, you need to know what's coming and what it means for projecting your leadership. Not to cut to the punchline too quickly here, but the coming changes will make projecting your leadership even more important in the future especially if you want to climb a changing and increasingly distributed corporate ladder. One key trend that's been rapidly accelerating in recent years is remote work. In fact, between 2005 and 2015, the number of people working remotely more than doubled, and that pace shows no signs of stopping or slowing, in fact, it's likely to accelerate. When I found in my financial market research from Prestige Economics in 2009, it was designed for remote work. We've never had an office, we've never had plans for an office, but at the time when I told people we weren't going to have an office, they thought I was crazy and they might've been less surprised if I told them I was going to go off and join the circus. But just 10 years later in 2019, 30% of jobs were remote full-time, and 54% of jobs were remote at least once per month. That may sound like a lot, but it's still quite low from what I expect we'll see in the future. Remote work is great, you have more control over how, when and where you work, but you're also disconnected geographically from your colleagues, managers, and customers. And the only way to bridge that gap is to do something impactful, to do something visible. Doing a good job is important. That's always mission number one, but it's not enough. Especially, if you want to be seen and be visible above a field of increasingly dispersed workers. You've heard people say, you need to stand out to be outstanding. Well, that's the key. You need a positive way to stand out and you need to be able to reach people that are separated by space and time, or at least a few times zones. Building your visibility as a leader isn't just a project or goal for the present. It's also something that's going to become increasingly important for your career in the future.
