The golden rule of culture change

- Whether you're planning a culture change movement for an entire organization or for a small team, I have a golden rule that applies across the board. Culture change can't and won't happen unless you have participation and psychological safety. First, let's talk about the importance of participation. People are innately change averse. We're programmed to stick with what we know and what we feel safe with, but your colleagues will be more open to change than you or even they think. That's if, and it's a big if, they have a real stake in what's happening. Think of it like this. If you learned that your favorite restaurant was shutting down, changing its menu and reopening, you might think twice about going back, but what if you were invited to come into the restaurant, even get involved in developing the new menu?
