The impact of your attitude and interactions

- Have you ever wondered why some recruiters achieve great success while others struggle to consistently achieve hiring objectives? Working hard or long hours does not guarantee your success, but maintaining a positive attitude when you interact with your hiring managers and candidates does. It's important to identify your why to maintain a positive attitude and motivation. It's easy to be positive and motivated when things are going well. However, you will often face the high volume of open requisitions, unrealistic deadlines, conflicting priorities, objections, delays, and disappointments. When you stay focused on your why, you will develop the mental strength to handle the unpredictable. To help identify your why, write down 10 non-negotiable goals. These should include personal health, career, financial, spiritual, philanthropic, or any other area that is important to you. Under each goal, list five specific dated action items. These action items detail the specific steps you will take to achieve each goal, and then post these goals where you can see them as you work and check off the action items as they are achieved. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and will help you stay positive and motivated. Surround yourself with positive, encouraging people and materials. The most successful recruiters continue to grow their supportive network of passionate, growth-oriented colleagues and friends, and identify individuals who are high achievers in any profession and include them in your professional network and learn from them. Also interact with successful talent acquisition professionals who are willing to share what they do to stay positive and motivated. There are many excellent courses on LinkedIn Learning and SHRM, the Society of Human Resource Management, provides excellent online resources that are much more positive than reading or watching the news. You could also attend local, state or national HR events to interact with other successful HR professionals who you can then add to your network. When you commit to a lifetime of learning, you can anticipate changes in trends, which prevents you from being blindsided and helps you maintain your positive attitude. As you experience success in the recruiting profession, fill your work area with testimonials from candidates you've hired and ask them to recommend you on your LinkedIn profile. Display any awards, accomplishments or wins that can immediately provide you with a confidence boost. Empower yourself by understanding you can choose how you react. You can't control the economy, the job market, your hiring authorities, candidates, or employees, but you can control how you choose to react to them. It's empowering to learn that you can choose how you react. No one can upset you unless you give them permission, and why would you? You will interact with so many different people, personalities, and issues, that often, it's best to decide not to react. Early in my career, I allowed both candidates and hiring authorities to affect my mood. I realized getting upset was a waste of my time and energy. I learned not to react, but instead, focused on changes that I could make so these issues don't occur. You've got to be enjoyable to work with because people prefer to work with someone they like and that they enjoy, which then leads to developing rapport and trust. You will work with the same hiring managers repeatedly and you will be more successful if you earn their respect by the results you provide. Candidates have many options when they are considering a new job and prefer to work with someone they also enjoy. When you always project a positive attitude and focus on how you can benefit them, you will attract more top talent, so make a commitment today to surround yourself with positive people. Realize that you have 100% control over how you choose to react and always focus on how you can benefit both your hiring managers and your candidates.
