- So you've been asked to take on a big, difficult project, and you know it's going to be difficult. So the first negotiating rule is, if you don't ask you don't get. So this is your chance to ask for things like resources. And you have the power only at the start. Once you've accepted the job, then you're much weaker, you can't start saying, "I need more people." You'll notice with prime ministers who take over the country, the first thing they do is they say, "Oh, look at the state of this. Well, I'm going to have to change a load of things." Because at that point it's not their fault. Halfway through, they can't change much because they're already committed and it's all their own fault. And it's absolutely the same with this project.
