The solid foundations of a remote workshop
- Making it up as you go along is great if you're doing improv, but I believe the success of a workshop is directly proportional to the amount of thought and preparation that's happened in advance. This is important when you're running in-person workshops, but it's doubly so for remote workshops. I use a pretty simple framework for preparation. The five steps are why, who, where, when and what. It's that simple, but that doesn't mean it doesn't require any thought. The first question is the most important one. Why are you doing a workshop? What is it that you want to get out of it? Do you want to gather information or get to a consensus or come up with ideas? If you're being really honest, the answer may be that you have an ulterior motive. You may be trying to get a decision maker to come around to your way of thinking, or you may be trying to show your expertise off to colleagues. That's all okay, but if you're not clear…
