The timing of feedback makes all the difference

- In CCAF, feedback is where teaching happens, because the feedback takes place after learners have faced the challenge and taken action. It occurs at a learning ready moment and the timing of feedback just makes all the difference. In contrast to this simplistic notion that feedback should be offered immediately, we actually find delayed feedback is more effective. By delaying feedback as learners take a series of multiple steps which of course, most real tasks requires, learners have the opportunity then to continuously evaluate the efficacy of their work. As learners advance in their abilities, we delay the intrusion of judgemental feedback to permit self-assessment and error correction. Immediate feedback on the other hand, deprives learners of the opportunities to make U-turns, that is opportunities to correct themselves to go back a few steps or to start over to explore an alternative path.
