- [Presenter] There are a lot of smart people doing important research on the subject of unconscious bias. The studies you'll find linked in the accompanying PDF in this chapter show a few really important facts. Men's voices are perceived as more persuasive, fact based and logical than women's voices even when reading identical text. Female executives who spoke as frequently as their male counterparts were given 14% lower ratings of competence. Lean In, which is founded by Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook in partnership with the consulting firm McKinsey, are in a long-term study to assess realities facing women in the workplace. In the 2017 version of their study, they found that women are less likely to think they have an opportunity to advance. The percentage of women and men who think their gender has played a role in missing out on a raise, promotion or a chance to get ahead, women 37%, men 8%.
