Is your career on a jungle gym or a ladder path?
- The jungle gym approach versus the ladder approach is a different way to think about your career. So for many years I was only really aware of the ladder approach which is you start at a certain level, you work really hard, you get promoted to the next level and you keep working your way up on the rungs of the ladder so to speak. At Facebook I was introduced to the concept of the jungle gym and when I look back on my career ironically I think the biggest career shift I made was actually a jungle gym move back at Viacom. But what a jungle gym move essentially is, is instead of thinking about how to get promoted to the next level, you were very open and actually conscious of things that are a sideways. So different experiences, different teams, perhaps different geographies that may not be the next logical step for a promotion but after you do those jungle gym moves you actually become a more wholistic leader.
