The getchar() and putchar() functions read single characters from the input stream and output stream, respectively. The getchar() and putchar() functions work with integer variables and values, not characters. The getchar() function reads one character a time and does not wait for the Enter key to be pressed. Stream output with putchar() happens when the buffer gets full or the program quits. The character input and output functions are stream-oriented, not interactive.
