- An extremely diverse area in the manufacturing world is abrasive cutting. It's otherwise known as grinding, and yes, it is a true metal cutting process. It is just that the teeth tend to be very small, microscopic in some cases, and there a lot of 'em, as in thousands or more depending on the abrasive you're using. But why use grinding when you have milling and turning? With grinding, you can do all sorts of things you can't do with other manufacturing methods, such as it's one of the best ways of cutting very hard materials, like hardened steel and even concrete. You can also very quickly remove a lot of material from your workpart, thus speeding up the manufacturing process. Since there are so many applications for grinding, it stands to reason that there are a lot of tools and processes and some of them are grindstones.
