Acclimatization

- One final factor that we have some control over in reducing the risk to heat exposure is called acclimatization. Many studies show that lack of recent exposure to hot working conditions is an additional risk factor for heat-related illnesses. New workers, anyone that's not accustomed to working or training in the heat, or people that have not worked or trained in the heat for more than a week need to be acclimatized to build up their ability to perform physical activities in the heat by gradually increasing the workload and allowing for more frequent breaks during their first seven to 14 days of exposure. My experience is that many people don't take this seriously enough, and I think that's a mistake. Getting acclimatized to the heat and training your body to become more efficient in maintaining its core temperature during physical exertion is really, it's a real thing.
