BREEAM overview
- Launched in 1990, BREEAM is the world's first green building rating system. BREEAM stands for building research establishments environmental assessment method and is owned and managed by the UK firm BRE Global. Globally, there are more than 560,000 Breeam certified developments and over 2.2 million buildings registered for assessment in 76 countries. BREEAM is the inspiration for many other green building rating systems such as LEED Certification and Green Globes. BREEAM's quite popular in Europe. According to the 2015 Brigg's Report 'Going for Green', BREEAM has an 80 percent market share across Europe for sustainable building certification. BREEAM has multiple technical standards that evaluate sustainability performance of communities, infrastructure projects, and buildings.
