- Let's look at a couple more examples before we wrap things up. In the last video, we discussed slope and looked at applying slopes to the run in order to get the rise. In that example, the slope was expressed as a ratio or a fraction. In that case, four to 12. This is another one of those cases where it's important to watch those units. Now since the plans didn't call out any units, we can assume that the units are the same for both numbers, and I express the four to 12 ratio as meaning that the slope was four feet of rise for every 12 feet of run. Sometimes the ratio is given as something like one inch per foot. Now I'm dealing with two different units, so I need to remember to fix that before I do any math. In this example, one inch per foot could also be expressed as one to 12. Now once my units are the same, I can say that this means one inch of rise for every 12 inches of run, or I can say it's one foot of…
