- Let's take a look at lifting another common construction material, a steel beam. Steel beams get shipped out to the job site fabricated, or cut to length, for the area where they'll be installed. The weight of a steel beam will depend on its shape and the thickness of the steel, and this information can be found on the construction drawings. A common notation on the plans for a steel beam, like an I-beam, will look something like this, W18 by 114. What this means is, the letter is a code for the shape of the beam, and it's followed by a number that represents the depth of the beam. The last number is what we're looking for right now, and that's the weight of the beam in pounds per foot, or more specifically, in pounds per linear foot. That's the number you need to calculate the total weight of the beam, based on its length. If the steel beam you're moving is 40 feet long, just multiply that by the value given in pounds…
