Calculating the area of a circle
- When you need to calculate measurements related to circles, you have to know the formulas. The only two dimensions you may be able to directly measure are the radius and the diameter. The diameter is simply the length from one side of circle to the other. The radius is the dimension from the center point of that circle to the edge of the circle. The radius is half the diameter, and I'll use the length of the radius in all of the calculations I show you here, so if you know or measure the diameter of the circle, just divide it by two to calculate the radius. In construction, one of these two dimensions should be called out on the construction drawings. When you do layout in the field, the center of the circle is what's typically used to locate the circle on the site. Then, the dimension of the radius is used to draw out the perimeter of the circle.
