- So far, we've talked about distances, or one-dimensional lengths, measured in units like feet and inches and meters. And you've learned how to calculate areas, measured in square units, like square feet and square meters. Areas are measuring something in two dimensions, like the surface area of a floor or a wall. We need to calculate these distances and areas all the time in construction. But we're building structures that actually have three dimensions, meaning that they have length and width and depth. This calculation is known as volume, and volume is measured in cubic units, like cubic feet, cubic yards, or cubic meters. The volume of any three-dimensional shape is its area times its height. When designers are trying to figure things out, like how big the air conditioning unit needs to be for a building, they need to know the volume of each room in that building, and the volume of a room is just its area times…
