Calipers

- First of the hand tools I want to show you are calipers. Calipers operate by having a fixed jaw on one end and a pointer that slides along a scale. This here, as you can see, is a digital readout which makes it much easier to read. Older versions of calipers also known as verniers often times just had a scale and some versions have a dial readout. Calipers also vary in length, from the typical one hundred and 50 millimeters or six inches in length to around 18 inches in length. Another nice feature of most modern calipers is they have dual measurement formats both metric and English. With this type of caliper you have these large outside jaws to measure external distances. You also have these small inside jaws to measure internal distances and diameters and then at the very end you have the depth probe for measuring the depth of holes and the like.
