Compression molding

- [Instructor] Certain laminate types can be fabricated on a tooling surface. The A side, that has the backing of a negative shell. The B side, that allows for the compression of the plies placed in the middle. Basically you're creating a sandwich with the tool and the negative backing that trap and compress all of the composite plies. This technique alleviates the need for vacuum bags since the B side is creating the needed compression to keep the plies snugly held together which keeps air pockets out. This method is typically used for wet layups. Once the plies are in the tool the negative backing is placed on top and clamps are installed. These clamps are used to create the needed compression to squash the tools together. The fabricator needs to make sure that the clamps apply equal pressure around the mold and that with every usage the clamps are placed in the same spot to make sure all of the finished parts are…
