Construction master schedule
(upbeat motivating music) - Today's construction projects are getting bigger and more complex. We have more people out here onsite than we ever have had before. We've got different trades doing work that didn't even used to exist. We're wiring up smart buildings, connecting the mechanical equipment to computers, and we've got all of these people out here doing all of this work. And we want them all out here at the same time to get these buildings built as quickly as we possibly can. So how do we do that? How do we get all these trades out here working together without being on top of each other? We create a complex construction schedule that ends up looking like this. So if you look at this schedule, we've got all kinds of different activities stacked on top of each other, everything happening at the same time. Many people don't realize just how complex and how difficult it is to create what we call this network schedule and then transform it into a schedule that we can follow out here on the job site. In fact, the first use of computers in business was actually to solve construction scheduling problems. That's how complex this is. It's really hard to figure out how to get this trade working with this trade without being in the same place at the same time so that neither of them can work. How do we do that? We use construction software. We use scheduling software like Microsoft Project or Primavera's P6. Again, if we don't create a schedule that puts these trades working out here together at the same time, we just end up with that really long schedule, and it takes two or three times as long to finish this project and turn it over to the owner so they can use it for what they intended to. That's why to be successful in today's modern construction industry, it really takes somebody who knows both the process and what's going on as far as construction activities out here on the job site, as well as the computer software so that we get the right inputs creating the right outputs that we can follow out here on the job site.
