- [Instructor] Core is a sandwich construction. The sandwich construction is a structural panel concept that consists in its simple form of two relatively thin parallel face sheets which are separated by a relatively thick lightweight core. As the theory goes, the thicker the panel, the stiffer the panel, and thus added rigidity. Another way to think of about the areas of a panel that have a core center is to look at an I-beam. The two outer flanges of the I-beam would be the laminate skins on each side, and the core in the middle is the beam's shear web. The core supports the face sheets against buckling and resists shear loads, which means the core must have high sheer strength and must be able to resist compression forces. So how is a panel with core made? Skin laminates may be precured and subsequently bonded to the core, or the skins and the core can be co-cured in one operation.
