Creating a Maya area light
To begin learning about Arnold Studio Lighting, let's create a Maya area light. We'll use it to provide illumination from this ceiling light fixture. There are other ways to do this. We could create an Arnold mesh light and illuminate the scene with the geometry of the light fixture itself. However, we'll have more artistic control, and get better quality results and shorter render times by using a quadrilateral area light positioned close to the surface of the light fixture. Arnold supports most, but not all, of Maya's native lights. In the Maya create menus, under Lights, we'll see six light types listed. Arnold does not support the Maya ambient light, or the Maya volume light. The reason is that they are not physically based. But it's not a problem, because Arnold's capabilities more than make up for it. The other four light types are not only supported by Arnold, but their functionality is actually extended by Arnold.…
