Cutter basics

- Let's cover the basics of what makes a cutter cut as well as some cutter terminology. Note: there is a difference between lathe tools and mill tools in many respects but they also have a lot similarities. All tools have a shank. The shank is the portion of the tool that is used to hold it in the machine. This is going to be the strongest part of the tool to minimize deflection of the tool as it cuts. Cutter diameter is for drills and end mills. This may be smaller than the shank diameter depending upon the tool. This dimension is the diameter of the circle formed by the cutting edges as the tool rotates. Next, are the length of cut or overall reach which is the functional cutting depth. This doesn't include the shank. And when it comes to all cutters, they all have a large leading edge called the principal cutting edge which does the actual cutting.
