- [Instructor] Respirators can be broken down into two main categories. Air purifying respirators, which use a filter to remove contaminants from the air you breathe, and atmosphere supplying respirators that provide you with clean air from an uncontaminated source. Air purifying respirators can be further broken down into two main types, tight-fitting and loose-fitting. Loose-fitting respirators supply air through a hose to the user wearing a hood, with the other end of that hose connected to a mechanical air filtration device that the user's wearing that's blowing filtered air through it. Loose-fitting air filtering respirators and all types of atmosphere-supplying respirators are not commonly used outside of occupational settings.
