Drills

- If you're putting a hole into something, you're using a drill. If you're drilling into a piece of metal, ya have to start with a spot drill. These have a very small tip point, are short and stout, and made from extremely hard material that does not flex. Because of these, they make a very precise starting hole. If you start with a standard small drill bit, it may flex and walk a little before the hole gets started, which is not good. So, you get things started with a spot drill, and then follow suit with progressively larger bits until you reach your desired hole size. Now, if you're doing something in softer materials like wood, you generally go right to the size you need. Drill bits for wood also have an auger at the tip to help get things going. The auger sort of acts as a spot drill. Another type is a step drill. And these have shoulders in various sizes all in one tool. And finally, if you need really precise holes, you'll then finish the operation with a reamer.
