- [Instructor] 3D printed parts can be used to create custom jigs fixtures and other tooling that might otherwise need to be created at great expense. A 3D printed jig can be as simple as a piece to guide drilling on a part. Using 3D printing internally, means that the capability can be tested without sending a new type of part to a customer. It can also give staff familiarity with the technology should a manufacturer decide to use it more extensively in production. Let's look at a case study from Ultimaker and Volkswagen Autoeuropa Pilot Plant which produces about 100,000 cars per year with 4,000 employees. Volkswagen used Utlimaker's consumer-level filament printers to make custom jigs and tools for assembly and testing. This allowed them to produce 93% of all externally manufactured tools in house.
