- Do you know the average building wastes about 1/3 of the energy it uses? Energy Star is a voluntary energy efficiency program administered by the US Environmental Protection Agency, EPA. It was created to encourage good energy management as good business. It certifies top-performing products, homes, and buildings. You are probably quite familiar with this little blue label on consumer products, such as appliances. Just like a refrigerator or a bulb, an existing operational building can earn an Energy Star certification. Available since 1992, Energy Star certification has been awarded to nearly 30,000 buildings and plants. More than 450,000 commercial buildings, which represent more than 40% of commercial buildings in the US, actively measure and track their energy usage utilizing the free Energy Star tool, Portfolio Manager.
