- According to the US EPA, an environmental management system, also called an EMS, is a framework that helps an organization achieve its environmental goals through consistent review, evaluation, and improvement of its environmental performance. An EMS is about consistent and formalized review and evaluation of environmental efforts. This is the opposite of a well-intentioned but random and scattered sustainable program that may result in inefficiencies and costly and unfocused results. Consistent and formalized efforts help identify gaps and opportunities for improving the environmental performance of an organization. Some key components of an EMS include assessment of the business activities, products, systems, processes, and services, and their environmental impact, development of environmental policies and programs, clearly identified and communicated roles and responsibilities, workforce education and awareness…
