How much of a project requires storyboarding?

- Different types of productions have various needs for what should be storyboarded. Let's take a look at live action to start with. So the storyboard artist's time is generally limited by schedule and budget. We're only going to storyboard what's most important to start with and I'll give you an example why this is set up this way. So for instance, on "The Walking Dead," we shoot the show in eight days, which means prior to that we have eight days of prep. We don't get the script until day three or four. I only have a few days to storyboard it because then that has to go to production so they can figure out what they need to do before they start shooting on day one of the shoot. So I'm only going to be storyboarding the big stunts, and the big effects, and some of the really fancy camera moves. In animation, every shot has to be created because they don't know what to do.
