Introducing Arnold

- [Instructor] Let's get acquainted with Arnold. We'll learn a little bit about our new friend, and its strengths and limitations. Arnold is the default production renderer, so when you click render in Maya, Arnold is invoked. The old Maya software renderer is still available, but it is no longer being developed, and it certainly doesn't have any of the advanced features that Arnold offers. Specifically, Arnold is what's known as a physically-based renderer, and Maya software is not. Physically-based means that the materials, lights, and rendering tools are designed to simulate the phenomena of light in the real world. Old-school renderers like Maya software don't simulate light propagation. They're really quite fake. They weren't designed to simulate reality, but rather to take best advantage of the limited computing hardware that was available at the time they were developed.
