Introduction to BIM uses

- An important part in developing a project using BIM is to define the BIM goals. Most of the goals will be initiated by the owner in collaboration with the design build team. To achieve the BIM goal, BIM Uses need to be defined. The Pennsylvania State University, in a document called The Uses of BIM, define BIM Use as a method of applying Building Information Modeling during a facility's lifecycle to achieve one or more specific objectives. They identified 25 BIM Uses related to project phases to divide them into five main categories. Gather, Generate, Analyze, Communicate, and Realize along with their sub-categories. BIM Uses can also be broadly grouped into Authoring tools, Auditing tools, and Analytic tools. Some application or design are written to address a single task. Other uses are written to perform a simple task and are often referred to as integrated software tools. Also, keep in mind BIM uses directly related to Building Information Model, not modeling.
