Introduction to calculating the area of a shape

- One of the most common things that we need to calculate on a construction project is the area of some element. An area measurement is given in square units, such as square feet or square meters. This can include horizontal surfaces like the area of a floor or a sidewalk, and it can include vertical surfaces like the area of a window opening, or the total area of a wall surface. Let's start with a basic shape and calculate the area of a rectangle. This is probably the simplest formula we'll work with. The area of a rectangle is calculated by multiplying the length of one side times the length of the adjacent side. When we're working from a set of construction drawings or blueprints, this is often referred to as length times width. For example, to calculate the area of a rectangle with a length of five and a width of nine, you would just multiply five times nine to get an answer of 45. When we're doing this in the real…
